My Mother
She fought for me for forty years and never let go. Watching her battle cancer from behind a wall taught me what strength, mercy, and suffering with dignity really look like.
As my mother battles cancer yet again, I think of the many struggles she has had to endure throughout her life. She has been beset by a hard-headed husband and callous children, yet through the adversity she has always shown strength and perseverance. She tried mightily to raise me right despite not being fully equipped to do so. She fought tooth and nail to be the glue that held our family together, despite constant battles. She has battled her whole life, but never did my mother give up. Despite getting knocked down over and over again, she got up and continued to fight. Despite everybody pushing against her, she stood firm, never backing down. God equipped my mother with great strength, and it's a picture I now clearly see. My mom instilled in me many positive attributes, but it is I who failed to utilize them, because of my immaturity and desire to do it my way.
She tried desperately to save me from myself, and love prevented her from throwing me to the wolves, despite my despicable deeds. She has hung on for 40 years of my life despite being kicked repeatedly, showing me her immense strength, love, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and selflessness. I am blessed to have such a mother. I don't deserve such a blessing, and I thank God that I have her.
As she recovers from brain surgery she is once again showing me her tenacity and strength. I know God is using her for His glory, and she sees it as well. My heart is with her as she battles, and I am filled with immense sorrow because she is having to struggle yet again. I am honored to call her my mother and so very blessed to still have her in my life.
I see the power of God in her as she glorifies God in her struggle, for she knows that all things work together for good for those who are called. She is showing me how to suffer with dignity, how to face trials with strength from Christ. She sees that through her struggle God is softening hearts and bringing our family together. As she lies unable to walk and weak from surgery, she still fights for the family she has always wanted. I love my mother so very much and pray that she may know how truly sorry I am and how deeply I love her. I long to be with my mother as she struggles, to hug her and to let her know that everything will be alright. I want to thank her for all that she has done for me and our family. She is an awesome mother whom I truly cherish and thank God for.
